Loneliness is hard to admit

Updated: Nov 28, 2023

If you haven't already seen the fantastic 'viral' video advert for Charlie's Bar in Enniskillen, then I recommend you check it out now. If ever you needed proof that Christmas adverts don't require a big budget with plot lines dreamt up by expensive marketing companies, then this is it.

It's gone viral because its simple, important message, resonates with so many people. The concept that someone living within a vibrant community can feel so isolated and alone. Whilst some will just see a bereaved old man, feeling sad and alone until he's befriended in a bar by a couple (and their dog), many others may see a little of themselves in that gentleman and sympathise to the way he's feeling.

MMC was founded largely due to personal experience of that very situation, and whilst I may have had a loving wife and family, there was still a strong feeling of loneliness. If you don't have friends to meet for a drink, have nobody to call upon to give you a hand with something, or you walk around your community constantly feeling like a stranger. Being alone or lonely is not fun, it's harmful, and can leave you feeling worthless. 'Social isolation' is not just something that affects 'other' people - it can affect anyone, at any time. Bereavement, divorce, shyness, anxiety, moving to a new area, the list goes on.

It's a complete misconception to assume everybody else is happy in life and you're the exception. The reality is, most people will feel lonely at some stage, and whilst I urge you to recognise those signs in other people, I also urge you to look for those signs in yourself.

Unlike the lucky gentleman in the viral advert, someone won't always come to you. You may have to make the effort, pluck up the courage, recognise the signs, and make the first move. Believe me, once you've done so, you'll feel a whole lot better, and you may be surprised by has fast things can improve.

If that first move is coming along to an MMC meet, then what are you waiting for? We're here and waiting to meet you.

All the best

Ross
